If your company is a supplier to the German federal government, then there will be an important change for your invoicing. Federal agencies in Germany will no longer accept paper invoices, but require e-invoices instead.

In Germany, companies are required to submit e-invoices to federal authorities since 27 November 2020. In Austria, businesses that provide services or deliver goods to the federal government have been required to submit electronic invoices in eBInterface format since 2014.

Since 18 April 2020, German local authorities and state governments are legally required to accept electronic invoices from their suppliers. On the federal level, this is already the case. For the supplier side, the phase of voluntary electronic invoicing will soon be over.

For service providers to the government (suppliers and/or invoice issuers), the most important deadline is 27 November 2020. Before then, they can opt to provide their invoices electronically. After that deadline, they will be required to do so. This applies both to German companies and to Austrian companies that have a business relationship with German authorities.
